“Combating Gender Based Violence in the South Caucasus” project is a three-year initiative implemented in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and funded by Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway and UNFPA. The project started to be implemented in April 2008.
Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a violation of human rights. Furthermore, it negatively affects productivity of women and their access to, and participation in, structures and processes of governance, decision-making and employment activities.
The main aim of the Project is to create an environment to reduce GBV in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in order to support protection of human rights, gender equality and women’s participation.
The Project constitutes a comprehensive and rights based response to the requests for assistance, and includes research and data collection, advocacy and awareness-raising, laws and legal reform and governmental action plans, capacity building for prevention of GBV, protection and rehabilitation of GBV victims and inter-country collaboration (link: coordination and inter-country collaboration) on gender equality and gender based violence.
GBV remains to be an important social problem in these countries where it is still a very sensitive issue which makes it even more difficult to be tackled. The governments and civil society needed support to develop policies, build mechanisms to combat GBV and support the GBV victims. The Project has country specific windows, which allows project implementation to take into account the realities in each country. It also facilitates exchange of experiences between the three countries in order to promote learning and mutual understanding.
Overall the project: through promoting women’s rights, ensures protection of human rights, supports development of human capital and serves sustainable development, establishes a basis for democratic governance in the region and through initiating inter-country collaboration between the three countries serves conflict resolution in the long term.
The project is implemented through Project Coordination Units based in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia under the UNFPA Country Offices and a regional coordination unit at UNFPA Turkey Country Office.
