There is a general lack of surveys, research and data on gender issues, types and costs of gender based violence (GBV) in the South Caucasus. Several aspects of GBV are to a very large extent taboo, e.g.: incest, sexual harassment at work, selective abortions, forced/early marriages, virginity, violence against gay/lesbians, bride-napping and women’s suicides. These shortages hinder development of policies to combat GBV and raising awareness on the issue.
The project aims to ensure that qualitative and quantitative research are conducted on the causes and consequences of GBV (particularly domestic violence) to be used in awareness raising activities and as a basis for the formulation of appropriate national policies and strategies to combat GBV.
